February 17, 2020

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through 9 PM for counties north of highway 20.

Today has turned out to be a soggy mess as expected. Areas south of highway 20 have seen mainly rain showers with a little bit of sleet or snow mixing in at times. Most of the snow has been held north of highway 20 with some primary and fringe counties already collecting 1-4” of wet and slushy snow.

The mess continues: A band of heavier precipitation will move in for the evening commute hours. This will still feature the same division between rain south of highway 20, a mix around highway 20 and mainly snow north of highway 20. Areas of heavy snow and/or rain will be possible at times. As temperatures drop to near freezing this evening, watch for slick roads and refreezing. Most of the precipitation will move out by around midnight.

Cold moves in: Once the mix moves out, skies remain mostly cloudy. The winds will pick up from the northwest with gusts up to around 30 mph. This will drop down our temperatures to the teens north and 20’s south, again watch out for icy roads. Fog will also be possible for portions of the area late tonight, mainly east and south. Clouds will eventually decrease for Tuesday morning with partly cloudy skies to follow. Highs will only reach the 20’s (low 30’s south) as the strong northwest breeze continues in the morning. Winds die down for the afternoon.

Tuesday night and Wednesday: Lows drop down to the single digits with wind chills as low as -15° off of a north northwest at 5 to 10 mph. Wednesday will be the coldest day as the partly cloudy skies continue. Highs will be in the mid to upper teens with wind chills down to the single digits.

Warming Up: As an arctic high moves in for the end of the week, we will get a cold sunshine for Thursday. Highs will still be in the teens and low 20’s here. After the single digits and teens for Thursday night, sunshine and a wind shift for Friday will lead to temps skyrocketing into the mid 30’s. Temperatures will be near the 40 degree mark for the weekend with a slight chance for rain or a wintry mix for Saturday night into Monday.
